YELLOWKNIFE VOLLEYBALL ASSOCIATION
CO-ED LEAGUE RULES
1) The Canadian Volleyball Association rules of play shall prevail. Rule books can be purchased for clarification. Some new rules are as follows:
a) Players have one chance to serve the ball over the net, and land within the opposing teams court. This may touch the net on the way over.
b) The ball may be played with any part of the body.
2) The YKVA house rules governing play are as follows:
a) A team must have a maximum of 6 and a minimum of 5 players on the floor at all times, with a maximum of four women, or a maximum of three men.
b) Players may only be on the roster of and play for one team.
c) A registered volleyball player who is not on a team's roster may play, subject to the approval of the opposing team.
d) Players must be on the teams roster and have played a minimum three league games prior to that tournament being played.
e) Teams may only use players who are members of the Yellowknife Volleyball Association and who appear on the team roster filed with the Association.
f) A match consists of the best of three games.
g) Games are played rally point style, the first and second games are scored to 25, and the third to 15. You must win by at least 2 points.
h) With respect to arbitration of disputes, the ruling of the YKVA executive will be final.
i) The net will be set at the regulation height (2.43 m) for all Divisions
3) Matches consist of the best 2 games out of 3, and will last no longer than 55 minutes. The final game of the night shall cease at five minutes before the scheduled hour is up to give enough time to clear the court. Players shall leave the court five minutes prior to the next match to allow the following teams to warm up.
4) Teams which cannot field the required number of players by 15 minutes past the scheduled start they must default their first game. If the team does not have the required number of players by 25 minutes past the scheduled start, they default the second games, and the match.
5) A team may borrow a player from another team, and continue to play with the approval of the other team. In a default situation, the opposing team captain may elect to:
a) uphold the default, but commence play "for fun"
b) waive the default and play "for real".
6) Teams who default three matches may be suspended from league play.
7) During tournament play:
a) Rulings of Refereed matches shall be respected by all players.
b) each team shall provide at least two people for the following game to judge lines or keep score.
8) Each team captain is responsible for recording their team's win on the posted schedule following the game. 48 Hours notice is needed to reschedule any games. (Team captains may also phone the Statistician with the results.)
9) Each team is responsible for ensuring that:
a) no unauthorized persons occupy the gym during games.
b) equipment is taken down and properly stored at the end of the evening.
c) the gym, locker rooms and washrooms are left tidy.
d) no damage is done to school facilities. Any damage which is discovered should be reported to a member of the executive without delay.
10) Drinking and smoking in school buildings is not permitted at any time. These infractions will be dealt with according to the Discipline Policy of the YKVA.
11) Outdoor footwear must be removed upon entering school buildings, and clean soft-soled shoes worn on the court. Team captains are responsible for ensuring proper gym footwear is worn; any complaints from school staff may lead to a loss of gym privileges for the entire league, and will result in disciplinary action toward the team and the offending individual.
12) Food, soft drinks and pets are not to be brought into school buildings.
13) Small children must be supervised if they attend a game with a parent or family. Because of the distraction to players and the possibility of injury, children cannot be allowed to play on the floor under any circumstances. Opposing team captains can (and should) insist that parents control their children. Violations of this rule are grounds for disputing the game, and the executive may impose sanctions if deemed necessary.
14) Verbal abuse of referees or school custodial staff will not be tolerated. Complaints from school staff regarding abusive or uncooperative behavior may result in a loss of gym privileges. Therefore, it is extremely important that teams be sensitive to staff requests and conduct themselves in a mannerly and diplomatic fashion. Any complaints regarding school staff should be brought to the attention of the executive for further action; school staff must not be directly confronted.
